The School of Education
affirms the call of teachers into the vocation of teaching. In today’s schools,
we are challenged to meet the needs of students from diverse backgrounds. The
program seeks to prepare students by providing strong academic content
preparation, by developing professional knowledge and skills to become agents of
change within the classroom, and by affirming the qualities of integrity,
compassion and leadership through service. Our mission is to produce not only
well-trained state certified teachers, but also concerned, compassionate
individuals who value each human life and who are dedicated to helping each
student fulfill his God given potential. The Department is
committed to helping each student develop leadership skills and model a servant
attitude that exemplifies Christian principles in their relationship with their
schools and communities.
Education offers a major in
Elementary Education K-6. Student wishing to teach at the Middle or High
school should select a major in an approved minor area. Prospective secondary
teachers should meet all requirements for a major in the subject area in which
they plan to teach and for the minor in education.
Students planning to teach in
either the elementary or secondary school must not only meet requirements for
graduation from Belhaven College but must also complete courses specified for
teacher licensure. A Mississippi Teacher’s License which entitles the holder to
teach in the elementary and secondary schools in Mississippi are issued by the
State Department of Education, Division of Teacher Certification, Jackson,
Mississippi. Applications may be secured from the MDE website, www.mde.k12.ms.us. Students who plan to teach in states other than
Mississippi are responsible for securing all requirements and forms. Graduation
from the program does not guarantee a license will be issued.
All programs in Teacher
Education are subject to any changes in teacher licensure issued from the
Mississippi State Department of Education
ADMISSION TO BELHAVEN COLLEGE
DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY ADMIT ONE TO TEACHER EDUCATION.
