Belhaven University, formerly Belhaven College, offers an accredited degree in mathematics for students looking for personalized instruction and a strong foundation in core math principles in a Christian college environment. The Belhaven program acquaints math majors with calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and other fields of mathematics. We also offer general education and mathematics courses for pre-engineering, to be followed by transfer to an engineering school for all engineering courses. The Math Department boasts small class sizes of 6-12 and promotes personal, one-on-one instruction that enhances student learning and faculty interaction. At Belhaven, the link between mathematics and faith that has been removed by many scientists has been restored. With an emphasis on the biblical worldview, students are encouraged to see faith and mathematics not as warring entities, but as unified in God's truth.
In today's technological world, a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics opens the door to a number of career options. A Math major can find opportunities in a number of diverse fields, and Belhaven graduates have worked in everything from systems analysis, engineering and mathematics teaching, to actuarial science, cryptography and operations research. Government and industry also offer a variety of math-related occupations to the well-trained professional.
Belhaven University offers the following options in mathematics:
1) A mathematics major: a traditional mathematics major leading to either a B.S. degree in Mathematics or a B.A. degree in Mathematics.
2) A teaching option: a mathematics major paired with a secondary education minor which leads to state certification for teaching mathematics in grades 7 – 12.
3) A pre-engineering option: a mathematics curriculum paired with core coursework in partial fulfillment of the requirements to earn a degree in engineering from a college of engineering.
4) A mathematics minor option: a mathematics curriculum which can augment another major to enhance analytical skills and open further employment opportunities.
