Welcome Week - Parent Schedule

Belhaven University CampusWelcome Week is designed to introduce students, parents, and families to Belhaven University.  You will have the opportunity to meet many of the students, faculty, and staff who make up the Belhaven family.  You will also learn your way around campus and begin to feel at home at Belhaven!  The staff in the Office of Student Leadership is responsible for the planning and implementation of Welcome Week. You will receive a parent packet including a Welcome Week Guide at Welcome Week Check-In on Saturday, August 17 (Student Center Commons, 9:00am-5:00pm).  The Welcome Week Guide will include details and specific information concerning the Welcome Week schedule, events, staff introductions and other pertinent information.

Welcome Week Check-In (closes at 5:00pm)

All new students should stop by Welcome Week Check-In to receive essential information, including a BU bag, nametag, and a Belhaven University t-shirt.  Students will be given instructions for later in the week at this time as well.  Parents will also receive a Parent Packet during Check-In.

Residence Hall Check-In (closes at 5:00pm)
Student Center Commons
All resident students will begin the check-in process by completing necessary forms before moving into their Residence Halls.  Students will receive clearance to receive their room keys and may begin moving in once this is completed.  A Belhaven ID card is required for entry into the Residence Halls beginning this evening.  Students arriving after 5:00pm may check-in at the Residence Halls and will have the opportunity to check in for Welcome Week prior to the Welcome Gathering from 6:30pm-7:00pm (Center for the Arts, Concert Hall Lobby).

Dining Commons or Off-Campus
Grab lunch wherever you choose.  The Dining Commons is available.  The resident student meal plan begins with this meal.  Meals are $6.50 per person for non-residents.  

4:30 pm   Dinner (closes at 6:30pm)

If you’d like to enjoy dinner while visiting with other families and students, the Dining Commons is a great option!  Relax - enjoy dinner and great company!

Welcome Gathering/Welcome Week Kick-Off (Doors open at 6:30pm)
Concert Hall – Center for the Arts
All new students (freshmen and transfers) and parents will meet together for an introduction to Belhaven and Welcome Week Kick-Off!  Everyone will hear from Dr. Roger Parrott, President of Belhaven University as well as other key administrators.  Parents and students will transition to the following places and will meet back together at the Coffeehouse & Dessert:

  • Parents’ Orientation

Concert Hall – Center for the Arts
The role that parents play in the lives of their student is valuable and essential to the success of each student!  During this session parents will receive tips on how to make the transition to becoming a college student parent as smooth as possible.  Parents will be welcomed to the Belhaven University family and have a time to ask questions regarding college life.  Parents will also hear from key administrators in the areas of Student Success, Student Life, Student Leadership and Mr. Gary Maze, speaking on, “Parents…welcome to college!”  This session includes information not presented during summer pre-registration.

  • Peer Group Huddles

Peer Group Huddle Rooms – Various Campus Locations
At this first student-only event, students will meet their Welcome Week Peer Leaders and Peer Group and learn essential details for the next few days!

8:30 pm Coffeehouse & Dessert (Closes at 10:00pm)
Shoe Bird Café – Student Center
The Shoe Bird Café will be open for students and parents to make connections with other families.  Resources will be available to help parents stay connected beyond orientation.

1:30 pm  Family Farewells
Use this time to say goodbye your college student before the afternoon activities begin.  However, parents and families may stay for the afternoon activities and Campus-wide BBQ.  (Meals are $6.50 per person for non-residents.) 
2:00 pm  Recreation Day
Various Campus Locations – Soccer Bowl, Football Practice Field, Rugg Arena, Auxiliary Gym, Student Center Commons, and McLeod Field (Riverside Drive)
The afternoon is set aside for students to have some fun– play basketball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, flag football, wiffle ball or play kiddie pool kickball, compete with others in a variety of board games and visit with friends!  Indoor and outdoor activities are available! 
4:45 pm Campus-wide BBQ (until 7:00pm)
