Student and Alumni Spotlights for the Communication Program
Name: Briana McElroy
Hometown: Jackson, MS
Fact: I speak English and Spanish, and am currently learning Italian, French, and Portuguese.
I chose to come to Belhaven because... I enjoy the Christian atmosphere as well as the small classroom setting. I have the chance to build a relationship with my instructors, which is something that you can't do at larger colleges and universities.
One relationship that has meant a lot to me while attending Belhaven University... is my relationship with Dr. Elayne Hayes-Anthony, chair of the Communication department. As an instructor, she expects a lot from her students, and I think it is important to push your students to be the best that they can be. At the same time, she is a very understanding and helpful. If I have a problem that doesn't relate to the class, even then she is willing to help. She KNOWS what she is doing. They say those who can't do, teach. Well, Dr. Anthony is an exception, because she has more than the knowledge-she has the experience to back it up.
Because of my degree from Belhaven University... the options I have once I graduate are endless. I have already been offered an internship at the Clarion Ledger, which is Mississippi's #1 newspaper. I have completed an internship in radio as well. As a freshman with very little experience in these fields, it was the Belhaven name that helped me to obtain these offers.
One word to describe your experience at Belhaven: Priceless
