September 19, 2012 (Jackson) - This year will be another exciting year in the arts at Belhaven University and the Arts Ablaze Calendar has a complete listing of the many art events and show you where and when they are happening.

Plays, dance and music concerts, poetry readings, gallery exhibits and more are happening at Belhaven for the 2012-2013 school year.

Belhaven’s nationally accredited visual art, music, theater and dance programs will showcase the talent of our students and faculty who are performing at the highest level in the arts. Belhaven is one of only 30 institutions accredited in all four primary areas of the arts and is also the only Christian liberal arts university in the country that offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing.

The 24-Hour Theatre Thing

From Zero to Ten Minute Play in 24 Hours! Students gather on Friday and create an original piece of theatre in a single day; from idea to script to rehearsal to performance. Complimentary admission. Doors open at 7 pm.

A Victorian thriller, Angel Street, tells the story of a young wife whose fragile mental state hangs in the balance between her potentially dangerous husband and an eccentric detective claiming to have all the answers. Concert with the Far East Broadcasting –
Korea Children’s Choir
Tuesday, 7:30 pm, Concert Hall
The FEBC-Korea Children’s Choir has delighted audiences around the United States with their beautiful voices, colorful costumes, and skilled choreography. The choir has performed at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, The Pentagon, Walter Reed Medical Center and numerous churches, colleges, universities and music festivals. Tonight, the concert also features pianists Mr. Michael Rector and Ms. Sylvia Hong, a member of the Belhaven music faculty. Complimentary admission. Doors open at 7 pm.

An Evening of Diamonds I

Homecoming weekend in the Center for the Arts concludes with the intimacy of Chamber Music in the first of our Preston Chamber Music Series fall concerts. Mississippi Symphony Orchestra clarinetist Kenneth Graves is assisted by Belhaven pianist Dr. Stephen Sachs and recent Belhaven graduate and MSO violinist Shellie Brown in a program including Gershwin’s Preludes, Poulenc’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, Khachaturian Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano and much more. Fall series tickets $10 (one ticket gains admission to the entire Fall Semester Series), Seniors $5, Students free with ID. Poetry Reading: Sandra Beasley

Sandra Beasley is the author of I Was the Jukebox, winner of the Barnard Women Poets Prize; Theories of Falling, winner of the New Issues Poetry Prize; and the memoir Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl: Tales from an Allergic Life. Honors for her work include selection for the 2010 Best American Poetry, the University of Mississippi Summer Poet in Residence position, a DCCAH Individual Artist Fellowship, the Friends of Literature Prize from the Poetry Foundation, and the Maureen Egen Exchange Award from Poets & Writers. “Let the imaginary forces work” as we tell the classic tale of the rise of Britain’s heroic King Henry V leading his army against the French – “once more unto the breach” at Harfleur and with “we happy few, we band of brothers” into victory at the Battle of Agincourt – in this tightly trimmed production of the finale of Shakespeare’s historical tragedies. Mississippi Symphony Orchestra principal cellist Mr. Bennett Randman joins music faculty members Mr. Song Xie, violinist and Dr. Stephen Sachs, pianist in an inspiring evening of music making including two of the finest piano trios ever composed: Piano Trio in B-flat Major, K. 502 by W. A. Mozart and Piano Trio in A Minor, Op. 50 by Tschaikowsky. Fall series tickets $10 (one ticket gains admission to the entire Fall Semester Series), Seniors $5, Students free with ID. Mississippi Music Teachers Association Fall Conference

Belhaven University Music is pleased to host this year’s annual Fall Conference of the Mississippi Music Teachers Association. Scholastic and collegiate student compositions are interspersed with lectures, masterclasses, recitals and a guest recital featured immediately below. The conference fee is $20 (students may register for the convention at no charge) and includes admission to all events. Composer Robert Vandall leads an impressive list of clinicians which also includes music faculty from area institutions of higher education. This splendid recital, “Art Songs and Spirituals by African-American Composers” will feature the songs of Florence Price. The recital is sponsored by the Mississippi Music Teachers Association as a part of their annual fall conference. Tenor Richard Heard recently released a compact disc featuring the songs of Florence Price. Complimentary admission. Doors open at 7 pm.

Preston Chamber Music Series
An Evening of Diamonds III
Tuesday, 7:30 pm, Concert Hall
Performing for the first time at Belhaven, Amanda Smith Roberts and Jonathan Roberts of The Stardust Duo grace the stage this fall. The husband and wife violin/piano duo have been performing together since 2008 and specialize in performing not only standard classical repertoire, but also works that incorporate popular styles, namely jazz and blues. The duo’s upcoming program will feature works by Johannes Brahms, William Grant Still, Astor Piazzolla, Mark O’Connor, and a recent commission from Michael Annicchiarico based on Hoagy Carmichael’s jazz tune Stardust. Jazz Ensemble Concert

Come and experience a new and unique combination of chords and timbres as the Wind Ensemble moves to the contemporary avenue and performs some of the newer music in the wind band repertoire. With a variety of ensembles, a confluence of improvisational genres and styles delivers a unique musical flavor! This is a musical stew with all the ingredients including contemporary jazz, some original B.U. Blues and a side dish of some Gospel Music, jazzed up of course. In short, IT’S GONNA BE FUN! The 80th Annual Singing Christmas Tree

This year marks Belhaven University’s 80th anniversary of the Singing Christmas Tree, the oldest outdoor singing Christmas tree tradition in America. Dr. Christopher Shelt conducts the 80 voices of the Belhaven Choral Arts programs plus the Christmas Tree 80th Anniversary Choir, made up of participants from the tree’s history. This will be a year you won’t want to miss! Complimentary admission.

Choral and Vocal Arts: Handel’s Messiah

For more than decade, Dr. Christopher Shelt has given every member of the Belhaven Choral and Vocal Arts programs the opportunity to perform Messiah. Belhaven’s performance is excerpted from the entirety of Handel’s oratorio, maintaining the continuity of its comprehensive biblical portrait of the life and work of Jesus; his birth, death, resurrection, return, and eternal reign. Dr. Shelt will conduct the 80 voices of Belhaven Concert Choir and Chorale, along with soloists and orchestra in concertato style, contrasting large choir and small choir textures. Don’t miss this musical portrayal of the life and times of Jesus, the Messiah. Complimentary admission. Doors open at 2 pm.

Ever hear the expression “You’ve got to pay the piper?” It comes from a very old story dating from the Middle Ages about a Piper in a pied (multi-colored) outfit who has a flute endowed with magical powers. Belhaven Opera Arts is proud to produce another Seymour Barab operatic adaptation of the classic, The Pied Piper of Hamelin. American Seymour Barab (1921-) received a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Opera Association. Kurt Vonnegut says: “Barab’s music is full of magic. He proved to an atheist that God exists.” Dr. Christopher Shelt and Belhaven Vocal Arts students present this clever one-act Barab classic. Saturday morning family matinee is sponsored by Mississippi Opera. Complimentary admission. Doors open 30 minutes before show time.

Based on the world-famous melodrama by W.H.S. Smith
Directed by faculty member Stewart Hawley.
Based on a 19th century melodrama, this light-hearted musical tells the story of the virtuous Mary, the dastardly landlord Mr. Cribbs and Edward’s journey dashing from the clutches of drunkenness. With vaudeville bits and campy musical interludes, this show will send the whole family home humming “Do You Wanna Get Saved?”

Bach, Fantasy in F Minor, Op. 103, D. 940 by Franz Schubert, a monumental work by P.D.Q. Bach and some “finger buster” etudes.

Student composers from Belhaven University and Mississippi College realize the dream of having their compositions read by professional players of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, directed by Maestro Crafton Beck. Brief discussions of the compositions and the composers’ intentions are part of this positive, engaging, and exploratory session. Complimentary admission. Doors open at 5 pm. Reception following in the Grand Hall.
