Belhaven Commencement Honors Graduates
Belhaven College celebrated 125 years by graduating bachelors and masters degree students during Spring Commencement services, Saturday, May 10, at Thalia Mara Hall.
Dr. Alvin O. Austin, Chancellor of LeTourneau University, was the featured speaker. His Commencement address entitled, The Five Priorities for a Successful Life, was focused on the true meaning and measure of lifes success: love God, let God love you, love others, love Belhaven and work hard.
Austin challenged, If we want to find success, we must find it through faithfulness.
Austins extensive academic career began when he was appointed Vice President of Hardin-Simmons University at the age of 28, making him one of the youngest collegiate vice presidents in America. He went on to serve in various capacities at four other institutions before joining LeTourneau in 1986. Dr. Austins position has allowed him to serve on the board of educational councils and extend his reach into business and community dynamics. He often speaks on issues of relevance to American higher education and consults on education facility and strategic planning, institutional governance and organizational dynamics.
Rev. Brister Ware, Minister of Pastoral Care at First Presbyterian Church, gave the invocation and Bishop Ronnie Crudup, Pastor of New Horizon Church, offered the benediction.
Three special awards were given, honoring graduating seniors.
Andrea D. Bizzell was awarded the newly created, Student Citizenship Award, for exemplifying the finest in student servant leadership and academic excellence.
Alicia Lynn Caver was presented the Trustees Scholastic Award, which is given by the board, to the graduating senior with the highest scholastic average.
Zachary Owens was presented the Guy T. Gillespie Memorial Award which is given to the graduating senior who, in judgment of the faculty, embodies most nearly the ideals of the college.
