Belhaven Visual Artists Featured in Statewide Exhibit

Mississippi Collegiate Art CompetitionFebruary 24, 2016 (Jackson, Miss.) - The Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition (MCAC) selected thirteen works of art from seven visual art majors to be featured in its juried exhibition. MCAC only featured top artist from four-year colleges and universities in the state of Mississippi. The following students were nominated for their artwork:

Daniel Hause
Emmi Sprayberry
Lilli McFerrin
Emma Carter
Mary Ansley Chitwood
Emily Verdoorn
Molly Tait

“Considering the relative size of our art department compared to the large state schools, getting thirteen pieces accepted into the MCAC represents a huge success for our students and our program,” said Bob Pennebaker, Associate Professor of Art & Chair of the Visual Arts Department.

Art work varied from clay arts, drawing, mixed media and painting to photography, printmaking and sculpture. Richard Doubleday, Assistant Professor of Art in the Department of Graphic Design at Louisiana State University, juried this year’s competition. Among entries from the eleven colleges and universities, he chose 138 pieces for the exhibition.

Doubleday points out, “This event plays a critical role in supporting the development of artists and encouraging talented college students throughout the state of Mississippi. The value of all the artwork documented in this catalog not only reflects a group of advanced and original ideas, but also represents a larger body of work that plays a crucial role in the importance of fine arts education.”
