Honors Awards 2011

May 4, 2011 - The Belhaven University faculty awarded students who exemplify academic quality, leadership, service to others and character development. Every department highlighted certain students who have a positive impact on their community. The 2011 honors winners are:

ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT
Achievement in Accounting Award

Presented to a graduating senior on the basis of character, potential growth and development, and academic accomplishment in the department

Senior Outstanding Accounting Major
Christina Bull

Given by Mississippi Society of CPAs Award in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and promise in the field of accounting

ART DEPARTMENT
Freshman Art Major Award
Laura Tait

Awarded each year to a freshman art major whose skills and work ethic have resulted in creative accomplishment and exhibit potential for significant artistic growth.

Art Spirit Award
Rebecca Bean
Awarded annually to the art major who has, through interest, cooperation, and leadership, made the greatest contribution to the department of art during the current session.

Presented to the sophomore or junior who has demonstrated the greatest progress through the year

Awarded annually to a deserving student who shows outstanding scholarship in Biblical Studies

Biology Service Award

Given to the graduating senior who has shown the greatest degree of selfless service to the needs of the department through work-study, biology club, and positive interactions with faculty and students

BUSINESS DEPARTMENT
Achievement in Business Award
Tiffany Myles

Presented to the graduating senior on the basis of character, potential growth and development, and academic accomplishments in the department

James W. Park Academic Excellence Award
Darren Terpstra

Presented to the graduate who has achieved the highest overall GPA, completing at least 50 semester hours, and has shown exceptional leadership and moral integrity while completing a baccalaureate degree in business

Nehemiah Graduate Studies Award
Latecia Teresa Dawson

Presented to the graduate student in the School of Business who best exemplifies the academic and moral excellence of the Belhaven vision

General Chemistry Award
Ethan Semrad

Presented annually to the general chemistry student with the highest average in the class

COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT
Communications Internship and Academic Excellence Award
Joshua Jackson

Presented to the student who successfully completed an internship experience with accolades from the site supervisor and demonstrates high academic excellence

DANCE DEPARTMENT
Dance Daniel Award
Karissa Machacek

Outstanding scholastic achievement (Daniel 1:17) is awarded to the dance major with the highest cumulative grade point average.

Presented to the student who best exemplifies the spirit of a caring servant with the skills and knowledge to lead those they teach

Presented each year to a student majoring in Education who has demonstrated superiority

Awarded to a graduating English major whose college career as a whole, but particularly in academics, has demonstrated superiority.

Presented to an outstanding senior history major who excels in scholarship, character, and leadership.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Music Excellence Award
Shellie Brown

The Music Excellence Award is given to a rising senior music major who has been an example to all students in the department, exemplifying proper stewardship of artistic talent for the glory of God, demonstrating not only musical skill, but Christian character and zealous commitment to artistic discipline.

Kingdom Transformation Music Award
Victoria Senete

Presented to a graduating senior music major who demonstrates musical excellence and a strong commitment to use their musical gifts to foster cultural and personal transformation for the glory of God’s Kingdom

PHILOSOPHY
Humanities Award
Sydney Morris

Awarded to an outstanding graduating senior majoring in humanities who evidences a great ability in understanding how the works of art reflect the world views of their creators.

Philosophy Award
Stefan Sanchez

Awarded to an outstanding graduating senior majoring in philosophy who evidences a deep appreciation of the nature and purpose of philosophy and its centrality in understanding the human condition.

PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology Award
April Williams

Presented to the graduating psychology major who has indicated the greatest potential for personal and professional growth.

Social Services Award
Tessa Elztroth

Presented to the graduating psychology major who has indicated the greatest potential for personal and professional growth

SPORTS APPLICATIONS
Athletic Studies Scholar Service Award
Bobbie Grier

Presented to the student showing the best combination of academic excellence and service

SPORTS MEDICINE AND EXERCISE SCIENCE
The Mark A. Belcher Memorial Award
Kayla Maldonado

Presented to the Junior sports Medicine and Exercise Science major who, during the sophomore and junior years, has demonstrated Christian leadership, academic achievement, and professional potential in the field of Sports Medicine and Exercise Science. It is accompanied by a scholarship for the senior year.

THEATER
Theater Priscilla Award
Deanna Smith

Given to the theater student who has most diligently pursued the task of drawing alongside others as a vital helpmate to exhort them and push them to excellence, as Priscilla did with Aquila in scriptures. (Romans 16:3-4)

Theater Barnabas Award
David Harris

Given to the theater student who has been consistently reliable to get the tasks done, often without acknowledgment or accolade This award is named for the apostle’s helper in Acts 4:36.

International
International Student of the Year Award

Guilherme Brando
Presented to an Outstanding International Student as selected by the faculty
