Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day at Belhaven

January 16, 2014 (Jackson) - Belhaven University’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day on Monday, January 20 is a time for students and faculty to serve and give back to the Jackson community.

JoBeth Petty, Director of Student Leadership, said, “The purpose of the campus-wide MLK Service Day is to give our students a chance to serve and emulate the work and spirit of Dr. King.”

For over a decade students have participated in this day of service. This year, over 300 Belhaven students will volunteer at charitable organizations around Jackson and serve the needs of the community.

Students join their respective athletic team, student organization or group of friends and give their time to service projects like painting, cleaning, yard work, organizing, serving food, gardening and various other tasks. Places like the Mission First, We Will Go, Habitat for Humanity, Spencer Perkins Foundation and others will receive a helping hand from students this year.

“We all serve alongside one another to impact the community by reflecting Christ through serving. The university motto is ‘to serve, not to be served’ and this day is dedicated to living that out in tangible ways,” adds Petty.
