by Marsha Norman

Directed by Elissa Sartewll
Assistant Director James Kenyon

In so many ways, Marsha Norman’s ‘night, Mother is terribly outdated. First performed in 1983, it takes place in a world that is almost unrecognizable to us today.

-There were no cellphones
-Few people had a home computer
-Prozac and related antidepressants were not available
-Al Gore hadn’t yet invented the Internet that we now visit multiple times each day

And yet. Despite the dated feel of the environment, ‘night, Mother depicts a world that is all too familiar. Many of us will recognize the pain, the hopelessness, and the exhaustion that Jessie so desperately wants to escape. We may understand, too, what it’s like to live in dysfunctional relationships and broken families. What it’s like when nobody understands you. When you feel hurt and unloved.

And in our world of social media updates and digital technology we still are faced with the reality that behind the device is a person, whether or not we acknowledge them. How much can you actually learn about a person in 140 characters or less? The persona we present on Facebook and Instagram may have little to do with who we really are and what we really need and crave in this world.

We are broken people. Each of us. And it is an honest acknowledgement of that brokenness that can lead to what we most need: relationships that are grounded in love and forgiveness. But such relationships are hard work. They require us to grow around and through the pain that we inflict on one another.

It’s tempting to sweep our brokenness under the rug, to bury the dysfunction, to numb the pain. But failure to face these realities can lead to tragic consequences, seen and unseen.
