Student and Alumni Spotlights for the Theatre Program

Ethan Polson, Theatre Major

Name: Ethan Polson
Major: Theatre
Hometown: Ankeny, Iowa
Fact: In my early teens, maybe pre-teens, I got a giant fish pillow from Wal-Mart that was over 4 ft. in length. I still have that pillow. It currently resides on my bed in a room on the second floor of Robertson.

I chose to come to Belhaven because... I wanted to receive top notch theatre training and education while still attending a Christ-centered University. The professors here are both down to earth and talented in their theatrical emphasis. If you ever have a need to talk to any of them about things that aren’t even theatre related I have no doubt they’d be ready to help you as much as they could in a heartbeat.

One relationship that has meant a lot to me while attending Belhaven... It’s so hard to choose just one when you meet so many incredible people and professors here. But aside from the many incredible friends I have made over my time here, to choose one person, I would have to say Mr. John Maxwell, who is a theatre professor. John loves his students and he really loves to work with us and get down deep in regard to our acting. The wisdom I received from him is something that will stick with me not just in the theatrical world, but also in the way I deal with everyday life. In his classes many of us theatre students referred to him as our “Wise Noble Owl.” It would be a shame to not also mention here the name of a certain Scott Gaines, who was a senior theatre major the year I came in as a freshman. Scott was like an older brother figure, a mentor, role model and a brilliant actor all rolled up into one. We have many a fond memory of good times during shows and behind the scenes of shows. I have learned several things from knowing Scott; our friendship has had very positive impact on my life.

Because of my degree from Belhaven University... I can pursue a career in the acting world with a lot of experience to back up whatever I want to do. From my acting experiences on the stage to helping build the stages, sets and props. I am able to help in more ways than just being an ignorant actor, as I will understand what it takes to put on a production from every other perspective in addition to just acting in the show. On top of this all, with my degree I can go to a graduate school if I decide I want to get a masters degree in the future.

One word to describe my experience at Belhaven: Growth
