Dr. Brenda Redfern began teaching at Belhaven University in 1982, first as an adjunct professor and then as a full-time professor. Dr. Redfern teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in law, accounting, ethics, general business, and public administration. Dr. Redfern also teaches for the State of Mississippi in its Certified Public Manager program, focusing on governmental structure, history, and finance, employer/employee rights and responsibilities, and ethics. Dr. Redfern is frequently a guest speaker for various professional and governmental organizations.
Dr. Redfern is licensed in Mississippi as an attorney and a Certified Public Accountant. She is a member of the Mississippi Bar Association, the Mississippi Association of Certified Public Accountants, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Dr. Redfern practiced law with a local firm for many years. She also spent ten years in government service in executive management positions. Dr. Redfern was appointed as a Commissioner of the Mississippi Ethics Commission in 2011 by the Chief Justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court and reappointed to a second four-year term in 2015.
Dr. Redfern was awarded the distinction of one of the "2020 Northrup Grumman Scholars for Top 10 U.S. Ethics Educators" by the Ethics & Compliance Initiative, "Mississippi Top 10 Attorney - Leadership in Law" in 2017 by the Mississippi Business Journal, and 1998 "Mississippi 50 Leading Business Women" by the Mississippi Business Journal.
Dr. Redfern holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in accounting (1979, cum laude) and a Juris Doctorate degree (1987, magna cum laude), both from the University of Mississippi. She also holds a Masters of Accountancy (2011, summa cum laude) from Stetson University and a Master of Arts in Biblical and Theological Studies from Belhaven University (2021).
Dr. Redfern is a lifelong resident of Mississippi. She has been married over 30 years to Judge Richard Redfern. They have three adult daughters, a son-in-law, and one granddaughter.
Dr. Redfern enjoys quilting and sewing for her granddaughter, as well as traveling.
