A Letter from the Chair

Whether you’re at the exploratory stage of choosing a college home or already intent on earning a BFA in Creative Writing at Belhaven, I’m available to answer your questions, meet with you during a campus visit, and guide you through the portfolio admission process.

If you decide to continue your writing life and develop your craft at Belhaven, you will join dozens of current majors and minors who love writing just as much as you!

And, when your studies here are complete, you will join 80+ alums who work in diverse fields (just to name a few).

As you may know already, Belhaven is one of only 37 institutions of higher education in the United States offering a BFA in Creative Writing—and the only Christian university in the world that offers such a degree.

In our writing program, we emphasize:

  • Practicing the craft of writing through workshops in short fiction, long fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, writing for children, scriptwriting, screenwriting, and playwriting
  • Mastering applied skills in areas such as communications, public relations, graphic design, filmmaking, principles of editing, book publishing and production, Teaching English as a Second Language, and principles of secondary education (through dual-enrollment in our Master of Arts in Teaching)
  • Developing a broad liberal arts understanding of literature, art, history, and philosophy from ancient to modern times, and, finally
  • Defining and pursuing your unique mission, calling, and career in life

If you want to find out more about Belhaven’s BFA in Creative Writing, please email or call me. I would love to answer your questions and help you along the way as you consider joining Belhaven's storied and vibrant writing community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Randy Smith Chair,
