Graphic Design Student Opportunities

Clubs and Organizations

Art + Design Club is the official student organization of The Belhaven Graphic Design Department.  The organization uses graphic design to provide design solutions to the community.

Internship Opportunities

Internships are available for students as our department is notified of openings.  We get notifications on a regular basis for internship placement in various creative agencies including:

  • Local graphic design agencies
  • Local full-service advertising agencies
  • Communications/Design departments in various corporations
  • The Belhaven University communications department
  • Local church public relations/design departments
  • Work with freelance and independent graphic design studio artists

Off-Campus Experience

We take off-campus trips to local vendors such as printing companies, paper companies, galleries, and creative agencies.

Juried Exhibition

We offer the students an opportunity to have work judged and chosen for the Annual Graphic Design Show each year. This work is judged by creative professionals. The work chosen is work that is felt to be relevant and could be successful now within the graphic design industry.

Professional Portfolio Reviews

The student has multiple opportunities to have their work receive feedback during their time as a graphic design major. Each spring there is an upper classman portfolio review, as well as opportunity for portfolio during the MERGE conference in the Spring. Speakers also frequent the department and offer feedback to students on work as well.

Belhaven Creative Labs

Belhaven University is excited to be part of the the maker movement through a major collaboration between its Art and Design Department and Mathematics and Computer Science Departments. This partnership, known as Belhaven Creative Labs, brings together students of all disciplines to work on physical projects that foster technical education and creative exploration.

Students will have opportunities to learn and work on projects of their own interests, as related to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics).
Projects will involve 3D printing, design software, coding, circuitry and micro-processers, sculpting, data science, wood crafting, robotics, virtual reality, and more.
Belhaven Creative Labs was created to prepare students for careers, develop creativity and critical thinking, and provide an outlet to engage society in meaningful ways.

Belhaven Creative Labs are unique because its footprint spans several lab spaces around the campus including a lab for design, circuitry, and bots, another is home to the coding lab that covers simple circuits and machine learning to data science and a third hosts the 3D digital fabrication lab and sculpture studio.
