Student and Alumni Spotlights for the Music Program

Richard McGee, Music Performance

Name: Richard McGee
Major: Music Performance
Hometown: Jackson, MS
Fact: One person (friend) described me as an interesting-random-funny- “naïve-in-a-serious-way” type of person. I guess that’s a description of my personality.

I chose to come to Belhaven University because... There are lots of reasons, in my opinion, but mainly because I would be in a really familiar environment, having been involved with the school in a few ways due to how close I’d lived for several years. I also very much liked the music program, not to mention the people in it.   Belhaven also had a cross-country team, so since I had always been athletic, that turned out perfectly.

One relationship that has meant a lot to me while attending Belhaven University is... The one between me and my advisor/violin teacher, Mr. Song. Though he pushes me in ways I don’t understand sometimes, he knows what to do and how to really work with us individually. He is actually quite funny, as I’m sure everyone in the Music Department would agree.

Because of my degree from Belhaven University... I can feel that as a musician I will be driven to my true potential, that is, while I’m in school here my bicycle is being pushed, and once I graduate, the momentum will keep me going. I believe I’m also being pushed in such a way that I won’t crash. After college, I don’t know exactly what I’ll do, but the music will continue, in great measures I hope, and I will trust God on the “how” part.

One word to describe your experience at Belhaven: Purpose-filled
