MED in Reading Literacy Offered at Three Campuses

January 27, 2014 (Jackson) - Belhaven University is pleased to announce the addition of a new degree now offered at three of our branch campuses. A Master of Education in Reading Literacy is available at Belhaven's Jackson Adult and Graduate Studies, DeSoto and Orlando campuses. This degree program is also offered through our online program.

Reading is a cornerstone to learning and crucial to a child's educational development. This graduate degree will help teaching professionals become the catalyst that transforms the life of a student through reading.

Belhaven’s MED program offers advanced skills and specialized training for teachers who want to impact schools in the area of reading. This degree path is intended for those who are already teaching and have a teacher’s license. Teachers who enroll in the program will learn how to diagnose, evaluate and improve students reading problems as well as giving other teachers the same tool to meet the needs of their students.

The curriculum will prepare participants with the most knowledgeable and current practices in reading. Internships and practicum field experiences will give students an opportunity to apply classroom principles and techniques.

A master’s degree in reading literacy can put teachers into supervisory and leadership roles in education. Many school districts use literacy coaches or reading specialists to improve instruction. Additional job possibilities include a variety of instructional settings and collegiate positions such as teaching remedial reading. This degree path is specialized and can lead to a specialist degree or a doctorate in reading.
