Belhaven University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST).

Building on Belhaven’s outstanding tradition of integrating the arts into Christian higher education, the Theatre Department offers the Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and the Bachelor of Arts in Theatre with an emphasis either in Performance or in Production.

As a theatre major at Belhaven, you will take classes and create art alongside other students and faculty who care passionately about telling stories with and through theatre. You will be pushed to pursue excellence and to explore new ways of creating – because regardless of what we do, whether in the classroom, in the design lab, or on the stage, we are striving to tell stories that are worth telling.

It is the mission of the Belhaven University Theatre Department to train servant artists in the use of the art of theatre to serve their Community, their Collaborators, and their Creator. Students must interview or audition for acceptance to the Performance or Production emphasis majors.

What You’ll Get At Belhaven

  • Artistic excellence grounded in purpose. Whether you are an actor, a designer, a stage manager, a director, or a technician, we want to help you achieve excellence in your craft and in your life. Our curriculum and production season are designed to push you to engage with big ideas while you also develop the skills and artistry you will need as a theatre professional. Our faculty and students share a common belief that theatre is an important and powerful tool to share hope with the world around us.
  • A caring environment. Our faculty, staff, and students work intentionally to build and maintain a sense of community in the department.
  • Hands-on training in every aspect of theatre production. As part of your coursework, you will rotate through each of the following areas, gaining marketable skills in each: scene shop, costume shop, lighting crew, hair/makeup crew, props, sound, and house management.  Our students are frequently hired for summer stock jobs because of our reputation for this breadth and depth of training.
  • Solid actor-training. As an actor, you will learn how to use your voice, your body, your imagination, and your heart to bring characters to life. You will perform material from multiple eras and in multiple styles. In addition to the primary action-based training you will receive in the core acting classes, you will also have the opportunity to take classes in period acting styles, Meisner, contemporary scene study, and improv, among others.
  • Small class sizes and individualized mentoring. We keep our class sizes small so that you will get more one-on-one attention and training in the classroom. We know that no two students are the same, and we love getting to know each of our students.  We are eager to mentor you on your journey, whether in class, in production, or in more informal meetings and discussions.
  • Opportunities to design, act, stage manage, and direct.  We believe students learn best by doing! Each year, at least two of our productions will feature student designs, and at least one production annually will be directed by a student. All the while, the caring faculty will be there to mentor you through the process.
  • An exciting opportunity to double major. Belhaven University has launched an innovative program that allows students who are double-majoring to receive free tuition for their 5th year of study. This first-in-the-nation offer is only available to students who begin their college career at Belhaven University. Our theatre major is designed to enable you to easily double major. Learn more about the Free Fifth Year program.
  • A campus that celebrates the arts! Among Christian universities, Belhaven is the standard bearer for commitment to the arts. One-third of our student body is majoring in one of the arts! You will have opportunities to create and collaborate with your peers in dance, music, film, creative writing, and visual art. If you’re looking for a campus that embraces creativity and honors artistic expression, you will find what you’re looking for at Belhaven.
