Book and Lyrics by Howard Ashman, Music by Alan Menken

Directed by Dr. David Sollish

In 1995, I had my first experience with Little Shop of Horrors. Working with the West Virginia Public Theatre, a professional company located just south of Pittsburgh, I was cast as an understudy for ALL of the male roles.

What a delightful and educational experience to be able to study and learn all of the intricacies of these amusing and iconic characters! That production was only the beginning; subsequently, I have had the opportunity to work on Little Shop five additional times playing the roles of Seymour and Orin and directing the production three times (including another mounting of the musical at WVPT in 2009). This Belhaven presentation is my seventh production of the musical in all and, in many ways, my favorite.

Little Shop of Horrors began Off-Broadway—back in 1982—as a campy homage to the cult-classic Roger Corman film from the 1960s. Since then we have seen the musical spawn a major motion picture, Broadway and London productions, numerous tours, and it has become a staple in the regional and educational theatre. This very popular show provides a thorny (pun intended) dilemma for a director, especially one who has such a history with the script: how do you stage a piece of theatre that has been done SO many times before?! What you will see tonight is a staging of the piece that I have tried to make unique to my experience and to the show itself. I have been blessed with an amazing cast, crew, and production staff that has been patient in this process and willing to go along with me on a journey quite new and exciting. We hope you will enjoy it!
