Belhaven Professor Featured at Walter Anderson Museum of Art
The Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, Miss., announces the opening of Gretchen Haien Photographs from SeaZen and Interior Frontiers. This exhibition will open in the Jo Love Little Gallery of the Museum on Thursday, August 21, with a reception beginning at 6:00 p.m. Gretchen Haien will be at the opening. Haiens work will be displayed through October 26, 2008.
In these two bodies of work, SeaZen and Interior Frontiers, Gretchen Haien invites us to try a new way of seeing and seeking answers to larger life questions.
Interior Frontiers uses the frame or photographic edge to abstract a would-be interior or street scene, reordering shapes from reality into a new perception for the viewer. These studies earned her the Emerging Artist to Watch in Photography by the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.
SeaZen takes us on a stroll along the waters edge, noting a solitary rock or a beached one-person dinghy. These photographs are framed to be viewed as if through a ships porthole, the lone observer wonders whether this is a view of serenity and solitude or loneliness and isolation.
