Creative Writing Program Celebrates Successful Year

The Belhaven College Creative Writing program celebrated a banner year of student and faculty accomplishments during the 2007-2008, academic session.

Addie Leak, a National Merit Finalist, won a $5000 scholarship for a year of study in France, based on a submission of her own creative writing, and Lea Schumacher, from Vermont, earned a Fall 2008, internship with the University Press of Mississippi.

Other achievements include four students who placed, two in first and two in third, in regional writing contests against students from Ole Miss, LSU, Florida State, Rhodes College and Millsaps. There were also three students who published work in the Cedarville and Albion Reviews, national undergraduate journals, and Ruminate, a national creative writing journal that take submissions from all over the country.

Dr. Randall Smith, Associate Professor of English, will have his essay, “James Dickey and His Reader: The Movement from Drowning to Deliverance,” published this fall, in a University of South Carolina Press, collection of scholarly essays entitled, The Way We Read James Dickey.
