New Play, The Mayfair Affair, Premieres at Belhaven's Theatre

February 8, 2012 (Jackson) - A brand new play, The Mayfair Affair, will premiere February 23 at Belhaven’s Blackbox Theatre. Joe Frost, Belhaven’s Theatre Chair and Associate Professor of Theatre, wrote The Mayfair Affair and John Maxwell, Associate Professor of Theatre, will be directing the play.

This brand new play from the faculty and students in Belhaven’s Theatre Department is a comical, whimsical story of John and Samantha Mayfair. The play is about their desperate attempt to sell their final financial asset, the Mayfair Diamond, at a weekend affair at their estate. Their guest’s schemes turn them all into potential thieves, even the Mayfairs themselves.

Frost said, “I have written other plays before, but this is my first attempt at a farce. The play is a specific type of comedy with a plot full of deception and secrets, multiple mistaken identities, and narrow misses with people just on the other side of slamming doors. There is plenty of silliness and physical comedy involved in it too.“

The Memory Trilogy, Braids, The Great Play, The Silent, and The Playhouse are all shorter and more dramatic plays written and produced by Frost since he has been at Belhaven. Frost has produced many other plays around the country and has written two award-winning short films, and a screenplay for an independent feature film.

As part of the immersive theatre curriculum, all 14 students involved with the production are required to help in constructing the sets, costumes, sound, props and lighting. The set design being built in the theatre is an ambitious two-story structure.

John Maxwell, Director of The Mayfair Affair, said, "It's always exciting working on a new script that is full of surprise where everything is fresh and new.”

Don’t miss a chance to be part of the audience that sees this new play for the first time. The Mayfair Affair will be playing in the Belhaven Center for the Arts, Blackbox Theatre at the following times:
