Dr. Tonsha Emerson is a dedicated nurse educator and advanced practice nurse with more than 30 years of experience in medical-surgical nursing, psychiatric-mental health nursing, and nursing education. She is passionate about preparing future nurses through evidence-based teaching, mentoring, and coaching.
Dr. Emerson earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and built a strong clinical foundation in medical-surgical and psychiatric-mental health nursing. Her passion for mental health advocacy led her to become a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She earned both a Master of Science in Nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, further strengthening her expertise in clinical practice and academic leadership. As a Certified Nurse Educator, she brings excellence in curriculum development, student assessment, and clinical instruction.
Currently, Dr. Emerson serves as a full-time Assistant Professor of Nursing. Since joining Belhaven University as an adjunct instructor in 2025, she has continued to demonstrate a strong commitment to student success, professional development, and compassionate patient care.
Dr. Emerson maintains professional licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner and Registered Nurse. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, the Mississippi Nurses Association, and the National League for Nursing.
Her professional accomplishments include graduating from the Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy and participating in accreditation reviews for the Mississippi State Board for Community and Junior Colleges.
Outside of her professional responsibilities, Dr. Emerson is married and has two young adult children. She is an active member of her church, where she serves as an administrator. Also, she enjoys cooking, spending time with family, and sharing the love of Jesus Christ.
