Dr. Marks is an associate professor in the School of Nursing with over 26 years of nursing experience, including 20 years in academic nursing education. Prior to teaching at Belhaven, Dr. Marks served six years as BSN faculty at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), followed by 10 years at the University of Southern Mississippi. Dr. Marks taught multiple levels of medical-surgical nursing, health assessment, neuroscience nursing, and complex clinical nursing care at each institution. UMMC nursing students twice selected Dr. Marks for membership in the Nelson Order, a group of faculty recognized at commencement each year for exemplary teaching. She was honored by the 2019 graduating class at USM with the establishment of a critical care nursing scholarship named in her honor.
Dr. Marks holds professional membership in the Mississippi Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association. She holds an American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification as an Adult-Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. While an undergraduate student at the University of Mississippi, she was elected to Sigma Theta Tau, an international honor society of nursing, and Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society recognizing academic excellence.
Throughout her nursing career, Dr. Marks has remained firm in her expectations of excellence in patient care — both as clinician and educator. She has conducted numerous oral, poster, and online presentations addressing review of nursing care for complex conditions, clinical improvement projects, tools, and clinical updates for practicing nurses. Dr. Marks continues to engage in academic research designed to identify pedagogical philosophies and models that support the development of exemplary nurses.
