Doug Eltzroth serves the Belhaven University community as Artist-in-Residence, overseeing the worship and artistic expressions in the University’s weekly Chapel services. He leads student artists and coordinates diverse presentations in music, theater, dance, and readings that together enrich Belhaven’s worship culture.
Since joining Belhaven in 2003, Doug has annually written a song inspired by the University’s Verse of the Year selected by President Roger Parrott. These songs have become a cherished part of Belhaven’s spiritual rhythm, reminding the campus community of God’s truth and love through music.
Doug also oversees The Shoe Bird Café, partnering with Guillermo Salinas, Tessa Bennett of Just Vanilla Bake Shop, co-manager Cole Bishop, and Manifest Coffee. Along with a dedicated team of student baristas, he helps create a welcoming space for study, conversation, and fellowship. Each day features a Seasonal Drink, a new pastry, and table games—with the highlight being FIKA Trivia every Thursday, complete with fine prizes and hosted by Caleb Henry. The Shoe Bird Café is known for offering the best coffee and pastries in town—at the lowest prices around!
A longtime Jackson resident, Doug is married to Cynthia Newland, a professor of dance at the University. Their three children are Belhaven alumni—along with two of their spouses—and all now live nearby with their families, including eight grandchildren. Together, they continue a family legacy of faith, creativity, and education.
