Quick Facts:
Hometown: Depends on your definition! I lived in Minneapolis, MN, from ages 3-9. At 9, my family moved to East Africa, where I lived until I started college in Kansas City, MO. East Africa is still where my heart is, so that is where I am from.
Hobbies: I am an avid fiction reader! My favorite authors are J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, K.M. Shea, W. R. Gingell, Sarah K. L. Wilson, and Jane Austen. I also love creative writing, though I am rusty after years of academic papers. I enjoy writing any story that pops into my head. However, my current project is a hefty and epic fantasy saga (y'all don't even want to know how many words long each book is, or how many years I've spent on them). If I am not writing or reading, I am probably on a walk with my sisters, playing badminton with my brother, or thrifting with my grandmother!
What do you do in the Office of Admission?
I think of myself as your Belhaven big sister! I am here to support and guide you through the admission process as you discern whether Belhaven is the place for you. Yes, I keep track of and remind you of your next steps, but I also hear about your life and encourage you when the stress of school or life gets to you.
What is your perception of academic quality at Belhaven University?
Belhaven is a special place for academics because this institution strives for excellence out of an earnest delight in learning and a desire to be faithful in its mission. Whether you are naturally gifted in academics or not, you will have the support you need to rise to a higher academic standard through your professors', advisors', and/or tutors' help. We do not compromise on academic quality but empower our students to succeed here.
What do you like most about Belhaven?
As I mentioned above, Belhaven is a place of delight—delight of learning, delight in community, delight in competition, and delight in service. This culture of joy, welcome, and excellence is beautiful, unique, and refreshing.
What is your favorite place on campus and Why?
I am cheating, but I am going to say two. First, I love seeing the Helen White Residence Hall because it was my mom's residence hall for three years. She told me so many stories set in and around the building. Second, I love the Warren A. Hood Library, which is not surprising given my hobby list and the Wynn Kenyon Think Center inside the library is such a fun collaborative space!
What advice would you give to your incoming students?
College is unique. You will never have an opportunity like this to be surrounded by and living with your best friends. Please take advantage of it! However, resist the urge to live in a bubble. Get involved in the community, whether that is by serving, joining a church, or participating in other community events. Being with your peers is great, but to continue growing, you must intentionally surround yourself with people from various walks of life and stages of life.
