Your computer and your internet connection are the two most important components of a rewarding online experience. Therefore, we want to make certain that you have all the necessary resources available to successfully complete your course work.

Please review the information presented below to make certain that you possess the necessary components.

Online Degree Technical Requirements

A minimum download speed of 1.5 Mbps is required for admission, which is commonly the speed associated with a basic DSL or a cellular/satellite connection. A faster connection, such as cable or fiber service, will further enhance your online experience. A Wi-Fi connection is generally acceptable, but is dependent upon one of the two services mentioned above.

Students will need an internet-capable device to take courses at Belhaven University. The recommended device is a laptop or personal computer. It is not recommended to attempt to complete courses using a smartphone or mobile device, although there may be some limited tasks that can be completed on a smartphone or mobile device.

For best performance, Canvas should be used on a computer five years old or newer with at least 2GB of available RAM that supports the current or first previous major release of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Your browser will notify you if there a new version available so you can keep it updated. Because it is built using web standards, Canvas runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any other device with a modern web browser.

Canvas only requires an operating system that can run the latest compatible web browsers. Your computer operating system should be kept up-to-date with the latest recommended security updates and upgrades.

Through your Belhaven email account, you have access to Microsoft Office 365. There is an online version available when you log into your email account, and a free download version if you need Microsoft Office installed on your computer. For versions other than Office 365, you will need the current or first previous version of Microsoft Office.

Students need to possess basic computer skills, such as:

  • How to use a web browser and word processor
  • How to send and receive email
  • How to locate a file and attach it to an email or upload it
  • How to copy and paste
