Dance Department Auditions

Application process for acceptance into Belhaven University and the dance department are two separate items. Apply and submit items for acceptance prior to auditions.

Auditions for Dance Majors and Minors:

November 16, 2019 and February 15, 2020 from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm

Please complete the Audition Registration Form to reserve your place in one of our auditions. The Audition Registration Form is due two weeks prior to each audition date.

On the Fridays before each audition, the Admissions Office will host Discover Day - a day for you to check out all of Belhaven. During the Friday Discover Day, you have the option to observe or participate in dance classes with current students, meet with faculty, tour the campus, and attend our Dance Department Meeting featuring an informal choreography showcase.

We also present main-stage dance concerts during both the November and February audition weekends. Prospective students and their families receive complimentary tickets to the dance concerts on either Friday or Saturday at 7pm.  To reserve complimentary tickets, please complete the Discover Day registration form or email dancetickets@belhaven.edu.

Auditions Schedule: November 16, 2019 and February 15, 2020

8:00 - 8:30 a.m. Registration at Bitsy-Irby Visual Arts and Dance Center, 2nd floor
8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Dance Audition
*The audition begins with a modern/contemporary warm-up followed by ballet technique with an optional pointe portion. Then, you will learn original choreography from dance faculty designed to highlight your strengths and potential. Please see attire guidelines below.
12:30 p.m. Informational Meeting and Q&A with dance faculty in Studio 4 (all auditionees and their families are invited)
1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Small group meet-and-greet (auditionees with dance faculty)


Audition Attire:
The audition will begin with a modern/contemporary warm-up and then will progress to a ballet technique class. Men should wear a tight fitting t-shirt and tights/leggings. Women should wear a solid-colored leotard and pink tights. Leggings or cropped-pants can be worn over the pink tights for the modern/contemporary portion. Please begin with bare feet for the modern/contemporary portion and bring soft ballet shoes for ballet. If you are currently on pointe, and have been for more than one year, please bring your pointe shoes. Hair should be secure.

Helpful Information for Parents: This Visitor Information Guide provides local hotel and restaurant recommendations. Parents are invited to be present at the audition check-in and at the informational meeting with dance faculty following the audition. During the audition, you are free to explore campus or the Jackson community. A member of the Belhaven University Admissions team will also be available to dialogue with parents about the admissions and financial aid process. We invite you to attend an informational meeting and Q&A session with dance faculty in Bitsy Irby Studio 4 at 12:30pm.

All auditionees are encouraged to Apply and submit items for acceptance to Belhaven University prior to Dance Department auditions.

Video Audition:

Please submit DVDs or video links by May 1, 2020.

We highly encourage you to visit campus and audition for the Dance Department in-person, but we will also accept a video audition if it will not be possible for you to travel to Jackson.
