April 27, 2009—The Brogue, Belhaven College’s annual creative arts journal, won 3rd place in the literary journal category at the 2009 Southern Literary Festival, held at Millsaps College. The Belhaven College English Department was a founding member of the Southern Literary Festival, which began in 1937. Today, there are thirty member schools across the southeast, ranging from Vanderbilt University in Tennessee to Furman University in South Carolina.

The Brogue is comprised of poetry, prose, and artwork by Belhaven College students. As the only Christian college in the US offering a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and one of just 26 undergraduate institutions offering such a degree, Belhaven College offers a unique opportunity for students to prepare for a career in the art of creative writing.
