May 5, 2009 (Hattiesburg, MS)—The Belhaven baseball team is the 2009 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament champion after defeating the University of Mobile 3-2 in the title game on Monday, which took place at Milton Wheeler Field on the campus of William Carey University. The Blazers (40-18) got two runs in the bottom of the ninth to complete the comeback victory over the Rams (34-23) and earn their first conference tournament title since 2004.
With solid pitching by Patterson and Bennett and strong offensive leads by Westcott and Cooper (2 hits apiece), the Blazers came from behind to win the victory 3-2 over the University of Mobile Rams. Winning the GCAC Tournament means that Belhaven receives an automatic bid to the opening round of the NAIA national tournament which will be held at nine different sites around the country May 12-15, 2009.
