Hundreds of Belhaven College students turned out for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. campus-wide service day on Monday, January 19th. Students gathered in the Center for the Arts to form teams and eat breakfast before they had to brace the cold winter wind. Teams set off with shovels, rakes, gloves, and trash bags, ready to face dirt and hard work together. From mulching the trees on Riverside Drive to digging up turf for New Life Ministries, everyone pitched in to make Jackson area ministries and non-profits start off the New Year with an extra boost.

Chris Bennett, junior baseball player, says that he views the MLK Service Day as an opportunity: “It gives us a chance to come out and serve the community. It’s not about us looking good or helping each other–it’s about helping everyone else around us.” Chris joined the hundreds of other Belhaven students to give credence to the Belhaven motto “to serve, not to be served.”
