February 15, 2011: Dr. Marguerite P. Joyce, Dean of Faculty at Belhaven University Houston, has co-authored, alongside Reginald L. Bell, an article entitled “Communication Practices of Managers and the Predictability of Uncivil Communication in Response” in the International Journal of Business and Public Administration, Volume 7.2 (2010). The article was written as an examination of the direct correlation between poor managerial response to employees and the increase in workplace violence.
The article states, “The words we use to communicate are powerful.” It concludes saying that we need to, “commit ourselves to creating and maintaining an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation.” (49, 50) Joyce and Bell make several recommendations are made in the article, supported by strong evidence; to keep communication and respect levels high and workplace violence low.
