February 4, 2011: On Saturday, February 19, the Belhaven University Art Department will host the opening reception for The Student Invitational Art Exhibition from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. This Exhibition will be in the Gallery in the Bitsy Irby Visual Arts and Dance Center from February 19 – March 19.

"Our annual student show always exhibits the latest developments and the growth of our art majors," said Bob Pennebaker, Chair of the Art Department. "Of course, it always involves a multiplicity of approaches and media. It covers the gallery, the rotunda and extends down the halls [of Bitsy Irby Visual Arts and Dance Center]. It concludes a three-month period of work that has become to be known as our practicum experience, which has become a core centerpiece of our entire year and how we teach art and how students learn to experience making it. So it’s not just an exhibit, it’s a culmination of a lot of energy, creativity, and problem solving of the entire year leading up to it."

This annual exhibition of student works highlights a wide range of styles and media including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and mixed media. This exhibition is always one of our most festive and popular openings. "We encourage faculty, families, and students to come and support the art majors," said Pennebaker. "Enjoy walking through, contemplating what you see, and talking to the creators about what their work is about. Hopefully it just enriches and adds to your life and experience and personal growth." Admission is complimentary.
