June 5, 2012 (Memphis) - Allison Oliver is a single mother of two children who works and attends college classes. An education in these circumstances seems next to impossible, but Oliver has overcome many obstacles and has been given the help to pursue her education.

Oliver said, “I am a single mother determined to beat the odds, meet the needs of my children, and achieve my career goals. Education to me is a chance to have a brighter future and accomplish my dreams.”

Oliver is one of four Memphis area university students selected for this year’s Executive Women International ASIST scholarship. This scholarship is available to adults facing economic, social, or physical challenges, who are looking to improve their situation through educational opportunities.

An education through Belhaven’s Adult Studies program has also helped Oliver and many other adults working towards a college degree.

Don Jones, Assistant Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services, said, “This makes two years in a row in which Belhaven students have been honored with this scholarship, and in each case the help could not have come at a better time."

She wants to be an educator and is currently earning her Bachelor of Arts in Social Service at Belhaven University Memphis. Oliver said, “The ASIST Scholarship will aide me in completing my education and with costs towards licensure to become an educator. Also, studying at Belhaven has kept me grounded in God word and helped me prepare for the corporate world.”

Jones adds, "We are thrilled that Alison was selected for this award. She has persevered in her degree program. I am sure that this is just the first of many ways in which she will distinguish herself."

Belhaven stands among the select Christian colleges and universities that offer a unique general core curriculum encouraging the development of a personal worldview. The university believes a Christian worldview is a key to preparing men and women academically and spiritually to serve Christ Jesus in their careers, in human relationships, and in the world of ideas.

Founded in 1883, Belhaven University now serves over 3,000 students from campuses in Jackson, Memphis, Orlando, Houston, Chattanooga, Atlanta and online, offering traditional undergraduate degrees, graduate and adult degree programs, and online degree programs.
