March 5, 2012 (Rome, GA)- The Belhaven women's basketball team claimed its first Southern States Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday night defeating fifth ranked Lee University 64-54 at the Forum. This win was the second conference championship for the women's program. The last conference championship was in 1982 when the Blazers won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship.

Belhaven Head Coach Billy Evans said, “This game was a great team effort all the way around. We played outstanding, intense defense and held one of the best offenses in the country to just over 30 percent shooting from the field. Regena Jackson turned in another great performance and everyone made big plays and shots down the stretch. Johnson, Wakefield, Tucker, Carr, Leflore, and Barlow hit some key baskets in the second half that secured the game for us.”

Belhaven will be in Frankfurt, KY March 14-20 for the NAIA National Tournament and will find out the seeding and opponent when the NAIA announces the field on Wednesday.

Belhaven stands among the select Christian colleges and universities that offer a unique general core curriculum encouraging the development of a personal worldview. The university believes a Christian worldview is a key to preparing men and women academically and spiritually to serve Christ Jesus in their careers, in human relationships, and in the world of ideas.

Founded in 1883, Belhaven University now serves over 3,000 students from campuses in Jackson, Memphis, Orlando, Houston, Chattanooga, Atlanta and online, offering traditional undergraduate degrees, graduate and adult degree programs, and online degree programs.
