May 15 (Jackson) - This past semester, alumni and students in the Belhaven Music Department applied their learned skills and successfully competed on a national level.

Three Belhaven music student pianists, senior, Tianna Rogers and sophomores Rachael McCartney and Heather Plyler competed in the Mississippi Music Teachers Association spring competitions February 23 at Belhaven University. Plyler placed 2nd and McCartney placed 3rd, both in the freshmen and sophomore division.

Belhaven alum and violinist Shellie Brown ('12) represented Mississippi in the Music Teachers National Association String Young Artist Competition in the Southeast Regional in North Carolina in January.

Belhaven senior violinist Jocelyn Zhu ('13) was also chosen to represent Mississippi in the Music Teachers National Association in the Southeast Regional String Senior Division competition in January. Zhu was also a Semi-Finalist in the Schmidbauer International Strings Competition held in Texas this year.
