November 4, 2014 (Jackson) - The Belhaven University Theatre Department's production of the French comedy Tartuffe by Moliere will premiere on November 12-15. “Tartuffe is the best of all worlds - a beautiful script, gorgeous costumes and an ornate set design,” said Dr. Elissa Sartwell, Chair of the Theatre Department. “This play has been one of the most popular ones in the world, since it first premiered in 1669. When a play's popularity survives for over 300 years, you know the script effectively captures something about the human condition.”
This charming comedic play uses rhymed couplets from a translation by American poet Richard Wilbur. The plot centers on what happens when a conceited con man manipulates his way into a household and threatens a marriage with his hypocritical behavior. The visuals are very colorful and the audience will watch as an ordinary stage is transformed into an opulent French manor.
John Maxwell, Assistant Professor of Theatre, is directing Tartuffe and said, “I have wanted to direct this play in academic theatre for a long time and I love directing it here at Belhaven! It's entertaining and fast-paced. It has wonderfully rich language andI think the audience will love the characters in the play. The sheer brilliance of Moliere is great to see on the stage and this young cast has risen to the challenge!”
Tartuffe will be showing in Belhaven University's Blackbox Theatre at the Center for the Arts on Riverside Drive. Doors open 30 minutes before each performance with shows every night at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee performance on Saturday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m.
