March 10, 2016 (Jackson, Miss.) - Winterreise: Winter Journey Into Despair is an innovative voice concert from Dr. Christopher Shelt that will feature the famous cycle of songs by Franz Schubert. Premiering on March 20, 3 p.m. at Olde Town Community Church in Ridgeland, this performance will be sung in German and tells the story of a heart-broken man's love-lost journey into winter.
Composer and pianist Elizabeth Roberts will accompany Dr. Shelt who said, "The piano is an equal partner in Schubert's song writing and Libby captures his expressive intentions brilliantly."
A concert sung in German can be difficult for an audience to connect to the story, but Dr. Shelt, along with graphic artist Corrie Hung, decided to complement the performance with projected, thought-provoking, visual images and English translations.
"I am trying to create a concert environment that is equally visual and musical--an immersive artistic experience, added Dr. Shelt. I want to build a bridge to connect to people for whom this music would otherwise be foreign and distant. I want to use visual images alongside the English translations to invite the audience to understand and connect to this amazing and powerful cycle of songs. Corrie Hung's visual insights bring this music to a modern audience in a new way!"Admission is free and the doors open at 7 p.m.
