CANCELED
March 9, 2020 (Jackson, Miss.) - The Pirates of Penzance will premiere at the Belhaven Theatre Department's Blackbox Theatre, beginning April 2 . This 140-year-old comic opera is from the minds of writer W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan.
“Many great comedians have referenced Gilbert and Sullivan as an inspiration for their work, so it's been a lot of fun to go back to the source and see how so many great comedy moments have echoed this show from 140 years ago,” said director and Belhaven University Professor of Theatre Joseph Frost.
This timeless, topsy-turvy play focuses on the story of Frederick, an honorable young lad who is freed from his apprenticeship to a band of misfit pirates. By the arrival of his 21st birthday, he falls in love with the virtuous Mabel and, with the help of a bumbling bunch of bobbies, must save her sisters and their father the Major-General from the approach of the Pirate King.
Frost adds, “The Pirates of Penzance is some of the silliest stuff in musical theatre - it's beautiful, operatic music with goofy wordplay, and ridiculous scenarios, with some romance and slapstick fighting mixed-in.”
