Theatre Department Brings “The Importance of Being Earnest” to Belhaven

February 8, 2024 (Jackson, Miss.) - Belhaven University's Theatre Department announced the upcoming theatre production, “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde. Directed by Chair and Professor of Theatre Dr. Elissa Sartwell, this classic comedy will take place in the Blackbox Theatre February 22-March 2 at 7:30 p.m. with matinees showing on February 24 and March 2 at 2 p.m.

Subtitled “A Trivial Comedy for Serious People,” Wilde’s comedy of manners has entertained audiences for more than 125 years. Two dapper bachelors, Algernon and Jack, each create an alter-ego named Ernest as a way of escaping boring obligations at home. They attempt to win the hearts of two women who declare they could only ever love a man named Ernest. Jack and Algernon become increasingly tangled up in their own deception, and it might just take a miracle to set things straight.
