Belhaven University Strengthens AI Education with Appointment of Dr. Saman Sargolzaei
JACKSON, Miss. (August 14, 2026) — Belhaven University has appointed Dr. Saman Sargolzaei as associate professor of computer science and chair of artificial intelligence in the School of Mathematics and Science. An internationally recognized researcher and educator, Dr. Sargolzaei brings expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computational engineering to one of the university's fastest-growing academic programs.
In his new role, Dr. Sargolzaei will lead curriculum development and instruction in artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), AI ethics, and emerging AI applications. He will also oversee the continued growth of Belhaven's artificial intelligence program, mentor students, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and promote the integration of Christian faith and ethical leadership within AI education.
Dr. Sargolzaei's research focuses on human-centered, ethical, and trustworthy artificial intelligence, as well as emerging neurotechnologies. His work combines network science, computational neuroengineering, and machine learning to better understand complex adaptive systems. He is the founder and director of the Brain Autonomy and Resiliency Lab, where he leads research exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and intelligent systems.
Before joining Belhaven, Dr. Sargolzaei served as associate professor of engineering at the University of Tennessee at Martin and as a visiting assistant professor of computer science at Florida Polytechnic University. He also completed postdoctoral research at both the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
His excellence in teaching and research has earned numerous honors, including the University of Tennessee Alumni Association Outstanding Teacher Award (2026), the Cunningham Outstanding Teacher/Scholar Award (2025), and selection to the National Science Foundation's CMMI Game Changer Academies for Advancing Research Innovation (2024).
Outside the classroom and research laboratory, Dr. Sargolzaei enjoys singing in his church choir and spending time with his Golden Retriever.
