Fall Dance Concert 2015
October 30, 2015 (Jackson, Miss.) - The Fall Dance Concert has earned the reputation of being one of the most highly anticipated performances from the Belhaven Dance Department. This year’s concert will showcase the choreography of dance faculty and guest artists at the Bitsy Irby Visual Arts and Dance Center Studio starting November 6.
Cynthia Newland, Associate Professor of Dance and Chair of the Dance Department, said, This dance concert will take the audience on a journey through elements of time. Performers will offer a look into dance that is based on Hebrew biblical offerings and showcase excerpts from the historical ‘Sleeping Beauty’ as well as various explorations of past and present seasons of life."
The performance will feature works from Belhaven dance faculty such as the classical ballet from Sleeping Beauty, restaged by Ravenna Tucker Wagnon and a contemporary ballet entitled Song to the Loveless, choreographed by Caleb S. Mitchell. Emily Wright collaborated with the cast to choreograph the modern dance Now and Forever and incorporates projections into the performance. Kaphar: Prayer Offering is a modern/improvisational dance choreographed by Newland.
Guest artist Vincent Hardy choreographed the contemporary dance piece For Everything There is a Season. Elizabeth McMillan is another guest artist who choreographed the contemporary ballet About Time.
Our students are blessed to be given the opportunity to work with artists in the greater field of dance, adds Newland. These guest artists work on our students’ behalf to make connections to the world of dance, fulfilling the mission of the university.
