February 12, 2013 (Jackson) - Four students from the Graphic Design Department at Belhaven University were honored with awards at the American Advertising Federation (AAF) Student ADDY Awards Competition on Friday, February 8. The ADDYs are a unique national awards program designed specially for college students in graphic design and advertising.
"Im very proud of the quality of work these students have produced. I think these awards speak to the professionalism of our students,” said Angela D. Lee, Assistant Professor and Chair of the Graphic Design Department.
Kristen McCann, a junior from Franklin, Tenn., is pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and won gold for her Apple Spider package design. She also won Best of Show and will go on to the district competition. “It was such a wonderful opportunity to be able to submit pieces to the ADDY awards and be surprised with a win! Im grateful to my teachers Gigi Turner and Angela Lee for pushing me to do my best and encouraging me to submit my pieces,” said McCann.
Trey Self won silver for his poster design and Mallory Shields won silver for her identity package design. Ana Iverson is a graphic design major from Meridian, Miss. and won silver for her illustration. Iverson said, “As a senior, this was my first and last time entering the ADDYs as a student. I was so excited when I found out I won. The award ceremony was great and they combined the professional and student awards together so we had a chance to see work that was submitted by the professionals.”
McCann adds, “There are exciting things happening in the Graphic Design Department, including our first year of Practicum, real-world project assignments, and field trips where we are able to meet with professionals in the industry.”
The AAF of Jackson was founded in 1953 and is central Mississippi’s chapter of the American Advertising Federation. The AAF is the oldest national advertising trade association, representing 50,000 professionals in the advertising industry.
