“The campus-wide MLK Service Day is a great way for the Belhaven University community to come together to serve those around us, said, JoBeth Petty Murphree, Director of Student Leadership. “Serving others was at the core of all that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did in his lifetime and is a significant part of the legacy he left us. This day is set aside to honor him and help others!”

For over a decade students have participated in this day ofcommunity outreach and service. An estimated 300 Belhaven students will volunteer at charitable organizations around Jackson and serve the needs of the community.

Students join their respective athletic team, student organization or group of friends and give their time to service projects like painting, cleaning, yard work, organizing, serving food, gardening and various other tasks. Places like the Mission First, We Will Go, Habitat for Humanity, Spencer Perkins Foundation and others will receive a helping hand from students this year.

“We all serve alongside one another to impact the community by reflecting Christ through serving. The university motto is 'to serve, not to be served' and this day is dedicated to living that out in tangible ways,” adds Petty.
